BEING PROACTIVE TO REDUCE STRESS.

One way that lead to reducing stress is being proactive. Being proactive in term of:

1) Let go (at least a little bit!).

Recognize that you can't control everything. There will always be stressful elements in your life, but you can minimize the stress in your life by eliminating what you can and learning to cope with the rest.

2) Address stressful situations head-on.

Instead of avoiding or putting off dealing with your stressors, why not face them directly? Though you may not be able to single-handedly eliminate all of the things that are stressing you out, you may be able to alleviate them to some degree and, most importantly, prevent them from worsening and having increasingly adverse effects on your mental and physical well-being.

3) Get organized.

Getting organized, planning ahead and being prepared can reduce stress levels. One of the first key steps is to keep a day planner that lists all of your appointments, meetings, and anything else you have scheduled, such as a yoga class or class trip. This will help you know what your days look like each week and month. In so doing, you'll have a better sense of what you need to do and how to plan for these things.

4) Take control of your commitments.

While there are a lot of commitments you cannot control, there are a lot that you can. All too often, people say "yes" to things that do not bring pleasure, or cause undue anxiety, or take away from more important commitments. One reason that many people feel stressed out is because they feel over-committed and like they don't have enough time to pursue their interests or spend time with their loved ones.

You don't have to limit yourself; just get an idea of what you spend money on during any given month. Save all your receipts, make note of how much cash you need versus how much you expense to credit cards, and figure out how much money you have left over when the calendar turns.

2) After the first month, take stock of what you spent.

Don't write down what you wished you had spent; write down what you actually spent. Categorize your purchases in a way that makes sense to you. A simple list of your monthly expenses might look something like this:

  • Monthly income: RM3,000
Expenses:
  • Rent/mortgage: RM800
  • Household bills (utilities/electric/cable): RM125
  • Groceries: RM300
  • Dining out: RM125
  • Petrol: RM100
  • Emergency medical: RM200
  • Discretionary: RM400
  • Savings: RM900

3) Now, write down your actual budget.

Based on the month of actual expenses — and your own knowledge of your spending history — budget out how much of your income you want to allocate to each category every month. If desired, use an online budgeting platform, such as Mint.com, to help you manage your budget.

4) Be honest with yourself about your budget.

It's your money — there's really no sense in lying to yourself about how much you're going to spend when making a budget. The only person you hurt when doing this is yourself. On the other hand, if you have no idea how you spend your money, your budget may take a few months to solidify. In the meantime, don't put down any hard numbers until you can get realistic with yourself.

5) Keep track of your budget over time.

The hard part of a budget is that your expenses may change from month to month. The great part of a budget is that you'll have kept track of those changes, giving you an accurate idea of where your money went during the year.

This means study consistently (it may be daily) and don't crash study. Learning to study for long periods of time is an important skill as well. It may be hard or impossible at first, but it can be mastered.

You are there to learn so don't moan about going to class -- see it as an opportunity to improve yourself. Take pride in your commitment to your studies. However, do not neglect the fact that you will become depressed and will have no friends if all you ever do is study. Staying sane is half the battle, and having friends should remain a priority.
